The Super Rugby Pacific Competitions Committee has confirmed to postpone the first match against the Blues on Friday 18 February, due to multiple positive COVID-19 tests from Moana Pasifika players. Additionally, planning work will now be undertaken between joint venture partners Rugby Australia and New Zealand Rugby, SANZAAR, and their broadcast partners to explore opportunities to play the postponed game at a later date.
The Moana Pasifika team is in quarantine at their Queenstown hotel and is working closely with New Zealand Rugby (NZR) and health officials while adhering to all COVID-19 protocols.
All members of the other five DHL Super Rugby Pacific teams based in New Zealand have tested negative for COVID-19 and will continue to prepare for the start of the season, including this weekend's pre-season game in Queenstown.
The situation at Moana Pasifika's has also changed New Zealand's pre-season schedule. The Highlanders, set to face Moana Pasifika this weekend, will face off against the Blues and Gallagher Chiefs in three matches, while Hurricane takes on the Crusaders. Both matches are currently taking place at the Queenstown Recreation Ground.
The tournament will keep all interested parties and fans updated with further news regarding the postponement and the tournament schedule.
