South African rugby union team Pumas competed in the Premier Division of the Currie Cup and the Northern Section of the Vodacom Cup. Due to sponsorship, Currie Cup is called the MRU, New Nation Pumas. The team brings most of the players from Mpumalanga Province, (previously called the South Eastern Transvaal). The team's home ground is Mbombela Stadium in Mbombela, previously held at the Puma Stadium in Witbank. The Pumas are one of the younger unions in the country, introduced in 1969 as South Eastern Transvaal. Pumas did not win the Currie Cup that year. They were taken training by two trainers Chris Grobler and Danie Gerber, in 2006 but failed to win any of the 14 matches and got the last place in the Standing table. In 2005 and 2009, they won the Currie Cup First Division titles and were promoted to the Currie Cup Premier Division both times.

The Pumas hired a new coach Jimmy Stonehouse in the 2010 Currie Cup tournament. Despite being considered underdogs in the Currie Cup competition, the Pumas beat the current champions, the Blue Bulls, 22–21 on August 27, 2010, at Mbombela Stadium in Mbombela.

Pumas also won big competitions such as Currie Cup First Division (in 2005, 2009, and 2013), the Vodacom Cup (2015), and the Rugby Challenge (2018.)
