The Chiefs have played a total of 8 games in 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa, from which they won five games against Blues, Highlanders, Crusaders, and Hurricanes, while in Super Rugby Trans-Tasman Chiefs have won four games out of five against Force, Brumbies, Rebels, and Waratahs.

The Highlanders were ranked 5th in the New Zealand Conference and 11th overall after the seven rounds of the 2020 Super Rugby season. They should have played the Jaguars in the 7th round, but the COVID-19 pandemic stopped that game and canceled the remaining games. But the New Zealand Rugby Union created a new local Super Rugby event called Super Rugby Aotearoa. In the 2020 Super Rugby Aotearoa, the Highlanders won only three matches and ranked fourth, such as two against the Chiefs (28-27) and (31-33) and one against the Hurricanes by a score of 38-21.

In 2021 Super Rugby Aotearoa, the Highlanders received fourth place again by winning three games. They won over the Chiefs (23-39), Crusaders (12-33), and the Blues (35-29). After completing Super Rugby Aotearoa 2021, the Highlanders took part in the Super Rugby Trans-Tasman 2021 competition, in which they first played against the Reds and won the game by a score of 40-19. They also won all four games against Force (15-25), Rebels (42-27), Waratahs (59-23), and Brumbies (12-33).
